Nestled in Arvada, Colorado, on the outskirts of Denver, Talnua Distillery was established as the US’ first, dedicated, Single Pot Still Distillery. Talnua has been producing mixed mashbill Single Pot Still American whiskey since its foundation in 2018.
While they are producing American whiskeys, rather than Irish, they tip their hat to the Emerald Isle each Saint Patrick’s Da, when they release their annual limited edition bottling, Olde Saint’s Keep. This is anniversary bottling to celebrate the day the distillery’s doors were opened to the public, on Saint Patrick’s Day 2019.
According to Founder, Patrick Miller, “The name pays homage to the legend of Gaelic monks keeping the most special aqua vitae made at the monastery for themselves to share with their most esteemed guests.“
Talnua Distillery’s 2022 Olde Saint’s Keep release is an American single pot still whiskey triple distilled from a mash of 50% unmalted barley and 50% malted barley. The whiskey was initially aged in equal parts ex-bourbon and ex-port casks. The whiskey was then married and finished for 10 months in Pineau des Charantes Casks from the Southwest of France.
It was this 2022 release that was awarded the Best American Pot Still Whiskey at the World Whiskies Awards USA 2022. Blind evaluated against the other US Single Pot Still producers, the 2022 Olde Saint’s Keep took top spot and came home with this fantastic award.
Unfortunately, for us whiskey lovers around the world, Talnua whiskey is not currently available outside of Colorado. That said, travelling to the Mile High City for a visit is highly recommended! Nose: candied oranges, mixed berry cobbler, marzipan
Palate: stone fruits, dried cherries, leather, pecan
Finish: white pepper, malted milk balls, toasted French oak undertone
ABV: 45%
