The Dalriadan Part 2 of 2: 11 Year Old Malt Whiskey comprised of 60% Rich & Smoky and 40% Light & Fruity. 57.99% ABV.
After the sell out Dalradian Part 1, Killowen Distillery have announced that it’s now time to release the second phase Dalriadan Part 2. This time the 40%/60% blend has been flipped to 60% non-Irish distilled malt, and 40% malt distilled in Ireland. According to the Killowen Distillery “This delivers a little more smoky maltiness in the mix for the peat heads. What’s more is that this bottling was finished in PX sherry casks and Killowen’s own rum casks, that’s right, it’s another beloved Rum & Raisin”
According to Founder, Brendan Carty, “Whiskey lovers have always pondered which nation created whiskey, in truth whiskey evolved long before our fixed ideals of nation and kingdoms. Nowhere is this fluidity of place acknowledged more, than the lands surrounding the sea of Moyle. Predating whiskey’s foundations, there was once an ancient Kingdom known as Dalriata, a kingdom long since disappeared yet the fluidity of her peoples remains just as dynamic to this day.”
“This drop is a celebration of different, but heavily related whiskey traditions and dare we say, when merged, a beautiful fusion is created, both whiskeys originate safely within the boundaries of what was once, a vibrant sea faring nation, so here’s Sláinte to the past, or next 1400 years.“
Contents of Blended Malt
60% Double distilled Peated Malt, originating in Caol Ila Distillery, aged completely in Ex – Bourbon Hogshead and 40% 11-year-old Malt from County Antrim, finished for three years in Oloroso Butts. These two malts were then vatted together and finished 10 months in both PX sherry casks and Killowen Dark Rum.
Brendan goes on to explain that “Killowen thoroughly enjoy bonding and blending, especially when we are able to provide the consumer with full transparency of these whiskeys origins, continuing in the culture of integrity bottlings we have released to date. As usual we make the drinks we want to taste, and thankfully fellow consumers have the same point of view”
This is now available with an RRP of €134.95/£114.95, available online through Irishmalts and multiple retailers throughout the North of Ireland.
Official Killowen Tasting Notes
NOSE: Treacle, Fruit Salad Sweets at the start, then with apricot, Lemon and Pineapple coming to the fore, not forgetting the Atlantic turf fire in the background with coconut & Christmas pudding mix before baking.
PALATE: The same as the last time Crumbly Wensleydale, that wensleydale you get with fruit, maybe bits of dried apricot, lemon and figs. Ahh that loving turf note that we all know.
FINISH: This just keeps coming, turf, figs, dates & Christmas pudding. lots of cigar leaf but there seems to be a real lathery texture among that deep peaty smoke with very light citrus notes and even coconut flakes.
